‘Stop on Red’ event planned at Ocala intersection

The Ocala Marion Transportation Planning Organization and Florida Department of Transportation are partnering with the National Coalition for Safer Roads to host a “Stop on Red” event next week to raise awareness about the dangers of running red lights.

“National Stop on Red Week,” which runs from Sunday, August 6 through Saturday, August 12, was created by the Federal Highway Administration to educate drivers about the risks of red-light running and to help reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes.

On Wednesday, August 9, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., a safety outreach event will be held at the intersection of SW College Road (State Road 200) and SW 27th Avenue in Ocala.

During the event, officers from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Ocala Police Department will be conducting concentrated enforcement at the intersection, and they will provide a verbal or written warning as a means of safety education.

Volunteers will also have yard signs at each approach to the intersection displaying the following message: “Always Stop On Red.” In addition, safety tip cards and items will be handed out throughout the event.
