Marion school district wins national finance award for 23rd consecutive year

For 23 years running, Marion County Public Schools’ Finance Department has received national recognition for its transparent accounting practices.

Earlier this month, the Chicago-based Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the MCPS Finance Department.

In total, GFOA awarded 229 honors this year to school districts across the nation, and Marion County’s school district was one of only 13 to be recognized in Florida.

The award is based on the school district’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for fiscal year 2022, which ended on June 30, 2022. This is the highest recognition possible in the area of government accounting and finance reporting, and it represents a significant accomplishment by a government entity and its management.

The MCPS Finance Department oversees the school district’s nearly $900 million budget and implements financial changes based on current law.

The award recognizes the MCPS Finance Department’s “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story while creating incentive for others to read the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.

For the previous fiscal year (2021), MCPS was one of just 21 school districts in Florida, and 524 nationwide, to receive the award, placing it in the top one percent.

For more information about this award, contact Chief Financial Officer Theresa Boston-Ellis at 352-671-7700 or the Government Finance Officers Association at 312-977-9700. Additional information is also available on GFOA’s website.

In March of 2023, GFOA also awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the Marion County Clerk of Court and Comptroller’s Office for the 37th consecutive year.
