Trucking company lays off all Ocala employees as part of national closure

One of the largest trucking companies in the United States closed down operations earlier this summer and laid off 22,000 employees in the process, including 19 based in Ocala.

Yellow Corporation announced last month that it made the “difficult decision” to shut down its regular operations on July 30, 2023, resulting in a complete liquidation and the permanent layoff of approximately 22,000 employees.

Locally, the company operated its business out of 410 SW 52nd Avenue, near the Ocala International Airport.

According to a certified letter sent to its employees, the company made the abrupt decision due to  “unforeseeable business circumstances.”

In addition to the 19 employees who were laid off in Ocala, the layoffs impacted hundreds of other employees around the state of Florida, including 114 in Orlando.

Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, the business was founded nearly a century ago in 1929. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a week after sending the letter to employees.
