4 children hospitalized after school bus overturns in Marion County

(Update: On October 2, Marion County Public Schools released a statement clarifying that that the school bus that was involved in the crash on Friday, September 29 was not a part of MCPS. The story below has been updated.)

A school bus overturned on County Road 464 in Marion County on Friday afternoon, sending four children to a local hospital.

Shortly after 3:05 p.m., a school bus belonging to a private daycare service was traveling westbound on County Road 464 in the outside lane. As the school bus neared the intersection of SE 55th Place, the traffic ahead came to an abrupt stop, according to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report.

The school bus driver, identified in the report as a 62-year-old woman from Ocala, maneuvered the bus onto the north grass area in an attempt to avoid a collision with the other vehicles.

FHP stated that the bus proceeded to rotate clockwise while traveling on the grass area before overturning onto its left side.

According to the report, a total of 18 children were in the school bus at the time of the accident. Four of those children were transported to AdventHealth Ocala for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

The school bus driver, a 20-year-old female passenger from Ocala, and the remaining 14 children were not injured.
