Man nabbed on Sumter County warrants after caught driving without seat belt

An Ocklawaha man who was spotted driving without a seat belt by a Marion County sheriff’s deputy soon found himself behind bars.

The deputy performed a traffic stop on the vehicle driven by 29-year-old Anthony Joseph Tafoya in the 13700 block of E. Hwy 25. Tafoya was placed under arrested after the deputy discovered that he had an active violation of probation warrant for driving on a suspended license.

Tafoya also was found to be in possession of a cigarette carton containing methamphetamine, heroin and drug paraphernalia. He claimed ownership of the methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia but said the heroin wasn’t his, the report says.

Tafoya was transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug equipment and violating his probation on two Sumter County warrants for possession of controlled substances. He was being held on $5,000 bond on the new charges and no bond on the probation violations and is due in court Aug. 18 at 9 a.m.
