Ocala man resists arrest on charge of battering pregnant woman

Michael Bernard Shell

An Ocala man reportedly kicked and damaged a patrol car while being arrested for allegedly beating up a pregnant woman early Monday.

Michael Bernard Shell, 28, of SW 18th Terrace, was charged with aggravated domestic battery of a pregnant woman, resisting an officer with violence, criminal mischief with damage of between $200 and $100, and a pair of probation violations.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded shortly after 2 a.m. to Shell’s residence. Prior to arriving, the deputy spoke by phone with the victim, who said Shell battered her before she left the incident location to get away from him. She said she is four weeks pregnant and Shell is aware of it, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Shell told the deputy nothing happened except a verbal argument. He said he was tired of the victim staying home and doing whatever she wants to do while he works for a living. Shell said he confronted the victim and she didn’t care what he had to say. He said she packed her things and took her children with her, the report said.

Shell provided no more information about the incident. He said he had knowledge of the victim being pregnant, according to the report.

The victim returned to the incident location to provide a statement. She said Shell had been drinking all night and was drunk. The victim said Shell continued to provoke her, according to the report.

The victim said she was sitting on the couch in the living room when Shell grabbed her by the ankles and pulled her off the couch, causing her to hit her head on the floor. She said she screamed for someone to call 911. The victim said Shell grabbed her phone off the couch and hid it from her, the report said.

The victim said she got up and started gathering the children to take them away from the situation. She said as she was loading them into the vehicle, Shell started punching holes in the wall, according to the report.

Shell fought deputies while they were trying to place him into custody. He tried to go after the victim and ignored loud verbal commands to stop resisting. Deputies managed to get wrist restraints and had to physically put Shell into the back of the marked patrol car, the report said.

Once inside the car, Shell started kicking from inside, causing the door hinge to bend from the frame. The damage was estimated at $500, according to the report.

Shell is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Sept. 15.
